According to the police, actor Alec Baldwin shot a prop gun while shooting a film in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and hit two people in the process.

The 42-year-old camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was fatally injured.

Director Joel Souza, 48, was injured and taken to hospital.

The investigation into the incident continues.

According to the police, criminal charges have not yet been raised.

After the fatal incident, the filming has been suspended for the time being, according to media reports.

"The entire cast and crew are deeply shaken by today's tragedy," said the production company, according to the US media.

"We have suspended filming indefinitely and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe police and their investigations," it said.

Police reported that Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza were "shot and wounded when Alec Baldwin fired a gun that was used in the filming of the film" Rust "".

Cameraman Hutchins was therefore flown to the hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.

The 48-year-old Souza was taken to another hospital in an ambulance.

He will be treated there in the intensive care unit.

"The Hollywood Reporter" reported, with reference to police information, that his life was in danger.

The paper also quoted a spokesman for the production company as saying that the gun that was used on the set should have been loaded with blank cartridges.

Baldwin interviewed by investigators

Apparently there is currently no evidence of an intentional act.

"Mr. Baldwin was interviewed by investigators," Santa Fe Sheriff's spokesman Juan Rios told AFP.

He answered the policemen's questions.

"He came voluntarily and left the building after he finished his interrogation," the spokesman continued.

"No charges were made and there were no arrests."

The production company offered condolences to Hutchins' family and promised the entire team to help them "come to terms with this terrible incident."

The incident occurred on Thursday while filming the western "Rust" at Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico.

Baldwin is on board as the film's lead actor and producer.

The director is Souza, who previously staged the cop thriller "Crown Vic" (German title: "In the Net of Violence").
