On the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair, the specialist journal »buchreport« compiled lists of the best-selling books of the current year.

To do this, she evaluated the months from January to September 2021.

Here you will find the top positions of the respective lists.

Hardcover fiction

Seven of the books in the top ten bestseller list in the hardcover fiction category were written by authors from Germany - the other three are from the United Kingdom.

The placement of the Northern Irishwoman Lucinda Riley is somewhat tragic: The author died shortly after the publication of "The Disappeared Sister", the seventh and final part of her seven-sisters saga.

Juli Zeh was listed on the SPIEGEL bestseller list for the first time in 2012 with the novel »Zero Time«.

Her greatest success so far was the village novel "Unterleuten", which landed in 2016 at number six on the annual bestseller list.

“Über Menschen” is not only linked to this in the title, but also in terms of sales success.

The holiday season is still to come - but so far it is the best-selling hardcover fiction title of the year.

Hardcover non-fiction book

The Bundestag election left a few traces on the list of the best-selling bound non-fiction books up to the beginning of October: Sahra Wagenknecht comes in third place in the ranking with her milieu account "The Self-Righteous".

Still in 13th place: Robert Habeck with »From here to different«.

Annalena Baerbock's non-fiction book "Jetzt" was influential, but not among the best-selling titles.

Otherwise there are many old bestseller list acquaintances: Hape Kerkeling (with "I'll be gone"), Richard David Precht (with "Who am I - and if so, how many?") And Eckhard von Hirschhausen (with "Luck rarely comes alone «) were in the first four places on the noughties decade list - now they are back in the top ten.

Only Michael Moore, at the time number two with "Stupid White Men", hasn't had a non-fiction hit for a long time.

Paperbacks and paperbacks

Author Sebastian Fitzek, number one of the year's bestsellers in hardcover with his thrillers over the past three years, has ventured into the humorous genre this year and published "The First Last Day" (with the express subtitle "No Thriller") as a paperback - In the corresponding list, however, it is also number one. Enough people had not yet read Delia Owens' successful book "The Song of the Crayfish": Now the story from the wetlands of North Carolina is also a great sales success in the cheaper paperback edition.

When it comes to non-fiction books, an absolute long-runner tops the paperback list: “The child in you must find a home” by Stefanie Stahl has been in the book charts since 2015.

However, the paperback number one has been there for even longer: In February 2007, “The Café at the End of the World” was placed on the list for the first time - and it still finds more buyers than all other paperback non-fiction titles.

Amazing!

Children's and young people's books, guides

It is well known that books have some competition from other media in children's and young people's rooms.

But to the delight of the publishers, it is always possible to publish books for films or video games that get their fans to read.

A Pokémon lexicon and the latest novel by YouTuber Paluten in the Minecraft universe made it to the top of the evaluation in their respective categories.

The guides also show that celebrities from other media are beneficial to book sales: TV chef Steffen Henssler has delivered the most successful cookbook of the current year.

And in the “Nature & Garden” category, “Tagesschau” spokeswoman Judith Rakers came first with her book about “Home Farming”.
