Do milk and pasta prices cause the next shock?

Munich - The rising cost of living poses problems for many people.

Certain developments could lead to the fact that the costs for milk and pasta will soon also rise: In view of the increased production costs, the German dairy industry has warned of higher prices, including for consumers.

In a statement, the dairy industry association speaks of "many problems that currently exist" that endanger the dairy industry's supply chains.

As a result, the passing on of the “immense additional costs is essential”, is the further forecast for the coming weeks.

At the moment, the trade itself would still absorb the latest developments, according to the statement.

Milk prices threaten to rise - it is not just energy costs that are to blame

Eckhard Heuser, managing director of the association, explains the causes: "It started with Brexit, then there was a shortage of containers from China during the pandemic and now many additives and auxiliary materials are missing in the factories." Energy costs make the industry to create.

This is sometimes due to the fact that milk and milk products have to be constantly cooled, reheated and cooled again.

However, Heuser points out that groceries in Germany * are cheaper than in many other countries - "and therefore affordable".

Calls and demands from producers for higher milk prices are "understandable".

But they would have to be "passed on to the consumer".

Pasta: Shortages in durum wheat could lead to price increases

Meanwhile, consumers are apparently also threatened with price increases with regard to pasta products *: Climate-related poor harvests for durum wheat could lead to bottlenecks and price increases, warned the Federal Statistical Office.

The main reasons are drought and extreme heat in the USA and Canada as well as unfavorable weather conditions in other important growing countries.

For Canada, the local statistics agency estimates this year's durum wheat harvest at only 3.5 million tons - that would be only about half as much as last year.

Although durum wheat also grows in Germany, the amount does not cover the demand in this country by a long way.

83 percent of the noodle raw material depends on imports.

Last year, the pasta trade experienced a boom, with 405,000 tons, around 5.9 percent more pasta was imported than in 2019. Last year, 86.2 percent of imported pasta came from Italy.
