World Pasta Day, in 10 years consumption doubled

The consumption of spaghetti & co doubles in 10 years, in the period 2010-2020, from almost 9 to about 17 million tons per year. This was revealed by Unione Italiana Food which, on the occasion of the World Pasta Day on 25 October, announces the numbers and trends of the symbolic dish of Italian cuisine and certifies a liking for the dish above the pre-pandemic levels. Each Italian consumes over 23 kg per year, placing Tunisia, 17 kg, Venezuela, 15 kg and Greece, 12.2 kg in this special ranking. Overall, 1 out of 4 pasta dishes eaten worldwide is Italian and with 3.9 million tons of pasta produced by our pasta factories, Italy is confirmed as the world leader in pasta, ahead of the USA, Turkey, Egypt and Brazil.



More than half of Italian production (62%) ends up abroad. The countries where Italy exports the most are Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Japan, while those from which the most important performances in 2020 come from are China, Canada, Spain and Saudi Arabia. Compared to January / July 2020, the export of pasta in the first 7 months of the new year marks a decrease of 9.4% in value, but the comparison with the "pre-Covid" values ​​of the same period of 2019 shows a +13 %. Looking at the exported volumes of pasta, the 5 most strategic markets are Germany (+ 6%), France (+ 2%), Japan (+ 4%) and above all the USA (+ 10%), while the only negative value compared to to 2019 it comes from the United Kingdom (-4%), a consequence of Brexit. the Italian pasta sector has almost 120 companies, over 10.200 employees and generates a value of 5.6 billion euros.
