Accidents caused by prop weapons have already occurred on film sets in the past. After the fatal incident involving Alec Baldwin, a petition is now calling for a ban on firearms during filming.

After actor Alec Baldwin was fatally shot while filming, there were increasing calls in Hollywood for a ban on firearms on film sets.

A petition on the change.org website calling for a firearms ban and better working conditions for film crews was signed by more than 18,000 people by Sunday.

It said there was "no excuse for something like this to happen in the 21st century."

California Senate Democratic MP Dave Cortese called on Saturday for a law banning live ammunition on California film sets.

The state is the linchpin of the US film industry.

The first productions have already reacted: The successful police drama "The Rookie" from Los Angeles decided to ban live ammunition from the set with immediate effect, as the industry journal "The Hollywood Reporter" reported.

The well-known US actor Baldwin apparently accidentally shot the 42-year-old camerawoman Halyna Hutchins while filming the western "Rust" in the US state of New Mexico when he was firing a prop weapon.

She died in a hospital shortly after the incident.

There was to be a memorial service for Hutchins on Sunday.

The rules are clear - accidents still happen

The police are investigating the incident further.

The focus of the investigation is on the film gun master and the assistant director to whom Baldwin gave the loaded gun.

Baldwin met the widower and son of the killed camerawoman in New Mexico.

The rules for using prop guns on filming locations are usually very strict.

Nevertheless, there have been tragic accidents in the past.

The best known of these cases is the death of actor Brandon Lee in 1993. The son of martial arts star Bruce Lee died on the set of the film "The Crow" from a shot in the stomach.
