Not all oil is created equal.
Stiftung Warentest again took a close look at various olive oils in 2021.
In addition to two highlights, there are also two defective products.
Stiftung Warentest has
tested 27 oils
that show clear differences in quality and price: the price range ranged from 4.50 euros to 52 euros per liter.
Accordingly, the products tested include some from
discounters
such as Aldi and Lidl as well as from
well-known brands
such as Bertolli and Alnatura up to the
high-priced delicatessen sector
.
But is the motto here really expensive is better?
No, because among the best-rated olive oils * in the test there are also inexpensive products with a price from 5.35 euros per liter.

Olive oil at Stiftung Warentest: What does "extra virgin" mean?
The results of the Stiftung Warentest ranged from
good to poor
. Among other things, taste, pollution and consistency of the origin information were evaluated. But what does “
native extra
”
actually
mean? This is the highest quality class for which the EU olive oil regulation defines three positive properties: An olive oil can taste fruity, bitter and hot. In relation to this, not all olive oils were able to convince in the test: 15 oils showed clear defects, some were vinegar or metallic, one even tasted rancid. Nevertheless, according to Stiftung Warentest, the
quality of olive oils has increased
overall
in recent years
.
In 2021 there were 15 good results and only two poor.
In the 2020 olive oil test, there were two unsatisfactory and only nine good ones.

The test winners of the olive oil test 2021 according to Stiftung Warentest
Unfortunately, the testers were unable to give the grade “very good” once.
Nevertheless,
according to Stiftung Warentest,
there are
two clear test
winners that outperform all other products - unfortunately, as a consumer, you also have to pay for these two oils.
But the good news for bargain hunters: an oil from the Bertolli brand was also convincing, as did a discount oil from Lidl.
