The court astronomer of the British Queen Elizabeth II, Lord Martin Rees, expects certainty about the existence of life beyond earth in the foreseeable future.

"I think that in ten or 20 years we will know whether life, of any kind, is common in space or not," says the 79-year-old professor of the "Zeit" supplement "Christ and the World" according to a prior notification.

According to the scientist, however, it is unclear whether this could also be a question of intelligent life.

"It is quite possible that only here on earth are beings who are aware of themselves and their history."

Rees bears the honorary title of "Royal Astronomer" and advises the Queen on astronomical issues. Among other things, he was previously head of the Royal Society of Experts and Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge University.
