Blue Origin, the space tourism company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, recently announced plans to launch a commercial space station. Bezos announced this week that the company hopes to operate the station, called Orbital Reef ("Reef Reef", in very free translation), until the end of the current decade.

Advertising materials released by the company indicate that the station will be a "mixed-use business park" in the space, and will be able to accommodate up to 10 people. It was also reported that in order to plan the station, the company will cooperate with the companies Sierra Space and Boeing.

Blue Origin also said that the station, which will cover an area of 3,000 square meters, will provide its customers with an ideal location for activities such as making films under conditions of weightlessness, conducting innovative research and more. In addition, it was announced that the station will also include a space hotel.

At a press conference ahead of the launch of the new initiative, executives from the companies participating in the project refused to provide a financial estimate of the costs of building the space station, but a BBC website reports that Bezos himself will fund a significant part of the project, costing £ 726 million (NIS 3.2 billion). sleep.

And what do you do with the aging space station?

As you may recall, in July, the Blue Origin company made a successful debut flight in the field of space tourism, with Bezos himself on board the spacecraft, along with three other guests.

In addition, earlier this month, the company flew into space actor 90-year-old actor William Shattner, who previously played Captain Kirk in the "Star Trek" series.

In doing so, Shatner became the oldest person to reach space.

The competition for funding

The announcement of the ambitious project comes as the US space agency, NASA, tries to locate proposals to replace its long-established International Space Station (ISS), which is 20 years old.

Russian officials have previously warned that its cosmonauts could leave the international space station by 2025, because of concern that the outdated equipment could cause significant malfunction.

in response, NASA announced the advancement of the software for $ 400 million in contracts to private companies in the field of space, in order to Assist in replacing the old space station.

However, competition for funding is likely to be quite tough, given the announcement by a number of other companies of their own plans to launch their own station space by 2027.
