(ANSA) - LONDON, OCTOBER 27 - Appeal against the sentence of life imprisonment for Wayne Couzens, the Scotland Yard policeman in charge of the surveillance of British institutions and embassies who last March raped and killed Sarah Everard, 33, after having her kidnapped in a London residential neighborhood and taken away in handcuffs in a false arrest for violating Covid restrictions then in force.

The deed was filed today by his lawyers.

    Couzens, 48, married and with children, still in service at the time of the crime, was sentenced to life in prison on 30 September in the first instance after having declared himself in particular guilty of the charges disputed before the Old Bailey court.

The judge responsible for the verdict had called his crime brutal and atrocious, also denying him the right to the benefit of requesting an early release even after several years of detention.

The Everard case has aroused particular horror among the numerous female killers reported in the British capital and other UK cities in recent times, sparking protests and requests for greater protection for women;

not without fueling a surge in distrust of the police on the island.
