Since July 21, attendance at cultural places has fallen according to a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Culture.

Despite the releases of successful films like the last James Bond, dark rooms have attracted fewer people since the introduction of the health pass.

According to a survey commissioned by the government, the results of which were published by Le Monde on Tuesday evening, October 26, 39% of French people, who used to go to cultural places in a normal year, did not have not visited since July 21, when the pass became mandatory to enter.

The study then details the results for each cultural activity. Only 51% of people who went to the movies in a typical year have returned at least once since the pass was introduced. They are also only 40% used to being returned to the museum or an exhibition, since July 21, 27% to a concert and 25% to a play. Worse still, around 30% of those surveyed believe that they will visit cultural places less often in the future.

"The implementation of the health pass created a terrible shock and a very strong stop on attendance" of cinemas declared in August Hélène Herschel, general delegate of the National Federation of Film Publishers, on BFM Business.

It is "a fall that has not stopped since the introduction of the pass, and we are today around 20/25% of decline compared to an average of previous years".

Three weeks after the establishment of the compulsory health pass to enter cinemas, the measure had lost nearly 7 million tickets to the industry, according to data put forward by the president of the National Federation of French Cinemas (FNCF ).

Fancy the outdoors

Nevertheless, is the measure the only one responsible for this decline in the cultural activity of the French since the pandemic? The fear of contamination in confined spaces as well as the desire for large spaces after confinement, could have something to do with it. Thus, 74% of those questioned declared that they favor outdoor leisure activities over cultural outings.

“Even now, for 52% of people, it is the fear of being contaminated that prevails”, assured last Monday on France Inter Roselyne Bachelot, for whom “the health pass brings on the contrary security for many people.

But there are people who have gotten into the habit of streaming shows.

There is teleworking, which keeps the public away from places of culture.

I believe that there is a whole work of reacculturation in the performing arts, to say that nothing beats contact with real actors, real venues, ”she declared.

Last month, the minister announced the launch of aid of 400 million euros to support cultural industries.

They may need it.
