These offspring are not commonplace even for a zoo: a rare black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis michaeli) was born in Great Britain.
The male young animal was the first of its kind to be born with them, announced the zoo of the theme park "Flamingo Land".
The keepers were now looking for a suitable name in Swahili for the "large, strong and active" animal. Photos showed the rhinoceros together with its mother Samira. The rhinoceros came to Great Britain from Zurich in 2015, and father Magadi has lived in Flamingo Land since 2019. "We've been waiting for this baby for so long," said senior zookeeper Sam DeBelle, according to the Yorkshire Post. Mother and child are doing "incredibly well".
The zoo is known for its rhinos and participates in the European conservation breeding program.
According to the zoo, there are still 85 black rhinos living in European zoos.
In the wild they are considered to be critically endangered.
However, there was also good news of late: According to information from the World Conservation Union, the population of animals living in Africa rose from an estimated 4845 to 5630 between 2012 and 2018 between 2012 and 2018.
