(ANSA) - TRIESTE, 27 OCT - An experimentation based on the application of ecosystem regenerative agriculture: this is what illycaffè is doing in Guatemala and Ethiopia in favor of the decarbonisation of the agricultural sector.

The goal is to arrive at a "scalable model".

"If we move from a conventional model of agriculture to an unconventional, virtuous, regenerative one, paradoxically, agriculture could also become 'carbon negative', thus seizing carbon instead of emitting it", explains Andrea Illy, president of illycaffè.

In the zero-emission plantations of Jardines de Babilonia in Guatemala and Kokkere, in the Oromia region, illycaffèsta applies the principles of regenerative agriculture in which the balance of the ecosystem is restored through the planting of trees and protection. of the soil, increasing biodiversity. In the Guatemala plantation, illy will produce the first carbon neutral coffee idillyum in 2023.

In Ethiopia - adds the note - the experimentation makes use of the collaboration of the Coffee Training Center Ethiopia, a training center to promote the correct processing and export of coffee, and the model of regenerative agriculture could become an example for the country and be reproduced on a large scale in the African continent.

"The project represents a concrete response for the whole coffee world - comments Andrea Illy - we have set ourselves the goal of becoming a carbon free company by 2033 and we want to do it in a circular way".
