 An honorary research doctorate in Politics from Luiss will be awarded to economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director general of the WTO, the world trade organization.

The ceremony will take place during the inauguration of the academic year 2021-2022 of the university named after Guido Carli, on Friday from 10 in the main hall in via Pola and streamed on Luiss Social TV.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala - 67, dual Nigerian and American citizenship - was Nigeria's Finance Minister and World Bank number two. Since February she is the first woman and the first African to hold the position of director general of the World Trade Organization. He is in Rome to participate in the work of the G20 chaired by Italy, Saturday and Sunday at the Nuvola dell'Eur. He will deliver a lectio magistralis on the theme 'Serving the Global Commons: the role of trade in post Covid recovery and pre-pandemic preparedness'.

The ceremony will be opened by the speeches of the general director of Luiss Giovanni Lo Storto, of the student representative Angelo D'Alena, of the Rector Andrea Prencipe.


The lecture is given to Thomas Christiansen, professor of Political Science: 'The politics of global trade: the challenge of managing interdependence in a fragmenting world'.


The final speech will be by the president of Confindustria Vincenzo Boccia.
