A suspected knife attacker was seriously injured in a police operation in Hesse.
As the public prosecutor's office in Kassel and the police headquarters in North Hesse jointly announced, the police had been alerted by drivers around 1 p.m. because the man had tried to stop vehicles on federal highway 250 between the villages of Wanfried and Heldra.
When several police cars arrived, the 37-year-old suddenly attacked the officers.
According to the announcement, the police then "made use of the service weapon."
The man, known for mental health problems, was taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter.
Police officers were not injured.
The Hessian State Criminal Police Office started investigations into the use of firearms as usual.
Witnesses were asked for information.
The deployment site was initially cordoned off over a large area.
