The journalist and SPIEGEL columnist Bettina Gaus is dead. She died in Berlin on October 27 after a brief serious illness.

Gaus, born in 1956 in Munich, trained at the German School of Journalism and the Ludwig Maximilians University, was an editor at Deutsche Welle from 1983 to 1989 and reported from Nairobi from 1989 to 1996, initially as a freelance correspondent, from 1991 for the "taz" across East and Central Africa.

She then headed the parliamentary office of the »taz« until 1999, and was its political correspondent until 2021.

She has been a columnist for SPIEGEL since the beginning of April 2021 and commented on national and international political events here on a weekly basis.

Gaus was the daughter of the former SPIEGEL editor-in-chief Günter Gaus.

"Bettina Gaus was an incorruptible journalist and a brilliant analyst of the political situation," says SPIEGEL editor-in-chief Steffen Klusmann.

"Your voice will be missing."
