It is likely that in recent weeks almost every Israeli has heard the term "Expo 2020".

The huge world exhibition that opened in Dubai is one of the largest and most important international events that exist today and appropriately, it attracts crowds from all over the world, including a variety of Israeli visitors who enjoy getting to know the glittering statements, along with visits to various countries.

But what exactly is "Expo", when was it held and why in Dubai, and what else is worth doing in the area if you too have decided to be a part of this experience?

Here are all the answers you were looking for.

An organized trip to the UAE with Pegasus

The 170-year-old

"Expo", an abbreviation of the French term for event, was formerly known as the "World Fair" and was first held as early as 1851, in London. The event soon became one of the newest inventions in the world, such as the phone of Alexander Graham Bell or the First Edible Ice Cream Cup, famous buildings were erected for it (the Eiffel Tower and the fountain playing in Barcelona for example) and its importance was so great that the Second Olympics (Paris 1900) and the third (St. Louis) 1904) were held as part of the World Fair.

Over the years, secondary "expo" fairs have also been added, focusing on specific areas, but the tradition of the great expo has been preserved and in the 21st century it takes place once every five years. In 2013, Dubai defeated Yekaterinburg (Russia), Izmir (Turkey) and Sao Paulo and won hosting.

Why is it called "Expo 2020" and what is in it?

The expo opens with a huge and festive ceremony, including a performance by Andrea Bocelli, on September 30, 2021, about a year late from the original date (and will last until March 31, 2022). It was Corona who of course disrupted the plans, but the heads of the event decided that in order to maintain the sequence, they would keep the original name. The next expo, by the way, will be held in Osaka, Japan, in 2025.

In total, 192 countries are exhibiting at Expo 2020, making it the largest event ever of its kind. The expo takes place under the theme "Connecting minds - creating the future", with each country presenting one of three sub-topics that are an integral part of the reality of our world: opportunities, mobility and sustainability. Each country uses its own pavilion to present the sub-theme in different ways and everything is accompanied by folklore, music, food and more. Like traveling around the world without leaving the compound.

Israel is making history

Crowds of Israelis have already visited the United Arab Emirates in general and Dubai in particular since the "Abraham Agreements" were signed more than a year ago.

Many travel on organized trips and enjoy getting to know all the goodness and beauty that the glittering sayings have to offer and now, they can combine this with a visit to the Israeli pavilion at the Expo.

Israel used to exhibit in past exhibitions, but when the hospitality was granted to Dubai, no one knew if it would be possible this time as well.

As mentioned, the reality has changed beyond recognition and the Israeli pavilion has been received with joy and local enthusiasm and as an opportunity to present to the emirates and the inhabitants of the whole world who we are.

The pavilion was designed without walls, to make it clear that Israel invites the various guests to it, including those from countries with which we did not have relations until recently.

Along with changing exhibitions, innovative and smart technological developments and more, visitors get a golden opportunity to get to know the beautiful Israel, its landscapes and history.

Where does this happen?

In honor of the occasion, in Dubai as in Dubai, they went big. On the outskirts of the city, not far from the southern border with Abu Dhabi, a new "city" of nearly 4,500 dunams was built. Inside this amazing complex you will surely want to visit the Israeli pavilion, as well as the local pavilion of the United Arab Emirates, which is shaped like the wings of a falcon and provides a particularly spectacular sight.

The main "square" of the complex is called Al Wasl Plaza and from it you exit to every corner and area. Every day at 15:00 a local music performance is held in the square. From the observation tower, named "Garden in the Sky", you can overlook the complex from a height of over 50 meters, so prepare the cameras and at the expo you will also find the "Oasis", the oasis where an artificial and unique waterfall was built.

How to get in and what to know?

Tens of millions are expected to come from all over the world to the Expo 2020 in Dubai. It is estimated that more than 25 million people will visit the exhibition in the first month and if you decide to join, know that a ticket for one day (from 10:00 to midnight) costs 95 dirhams, about 83 shekels (there are also tickets for a few days, a whole month or For the entire exhibition period and VIP tickets if you are really interested).

Children under the age of 18, students and visitors over the age of 60 enter for free and so do those with a disability card, while their lender can purchase a ticket for half price. Warm recommendation: Buy tickets in advance and of course, come with proof that you have been vaccinated against Corona or with a negative and up-to-date PCR test.

What else are you doing in Dubai?

There are so many options in this spectacular statement, that the best way to get to know it is with the help of an organized trip, which will take you with a skilled guide to the best and most interesting places.

Of course you will not want to miss the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, as well as the huge Dubai Mall, where you can find a breathtaking aquarium and an underwater zoo.

Outside the mall there is a great water fountain show and throughout Dubai you should also visit the city of flowers and the various amusement parks and water, go for an evening cruise in a traditional D'O boat in the artificial canals, take a closer look at the "Dubai Frame" that captures the downtown in a beautiful picture Emirates Mall.
