Will unvaccinated people soon no longer be able to shop in the supermarket at any time?

After two federal states rushed ahead with the 2G rule in retail, Netto has decided.

Maxhütte-Haidhof - In the first federal states it already applies: the 2G rule in retail. In Lower Saxony and Hesse, supermarkets such as Edeka, Aldi or Kaufland can now decide for themselves whether or not to allow unvaccinated people to enter their branches. The German trade association is calling for the new 2G option model to be extended to retail throughout Germany. It is currently uncertain whether other federal states will follow suit. The discussion about the right to basic services is still making waves - politicians and all major grocers are taking precautionary measures.

Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) assumes that everyday business transactions would rather not make use of the option model.

This is confirmed by a member survey of the trade association: For four out of five trade companies in Hesse, the 2G model is therefore not an option.

Only companies with product ranges that require a lot of advice - such as bridal wear and photo shops or opticians - can for the most part imagine only receiving people who have been vaccinated and recovered in their stores.

2G rule in supermarkets soon across Germany?

Lauterbach warns that supermarkets will react

SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach spoke out against a 2G regulation in supermarkets. "Access to basic food and other basic food products must be open to everyone, including those who have not been vaccinated," he told the

editorial network in Germany

. He thinks a restriction is "extremely problematic". With the exception of supermarkets, however, he advocated 2G in retail.

But what do the supermarkets say?

Because it depends on them.

In the meantime, pretty much every large German retail chain has made its point of view clear.

The basic tenor: nationwide 2G will not exist in food.

The discounters Aldi and Lidl distanced themselves from the exclusion of unvaccinated people from their branches, as did the Rewe Group stores (Rewe, Penny, Toom Baumarkt).

Kaufland reacted quickly with a trend-setting statement, as did its competitor Edeka.

There will be no 2G controls at Real either, because the implementation of this rule would require that all employees have been vaccinated or recovered, said the Düsseldorf company.

2G rule in Hesse and Lower Saxony: Netto Marken-Discount does not participate

The discount store with the largest number of branches in Germany, Netto, clearly rejected the 2G option.

The company, based in Maxhütte-Haidhof in Bavaria, referred to

as its "important role in local supply for the population." Accordingly, the "comprehensive and proven hygiene concept" will continue to apply in all branches of the chain - albeit in accordance with the respective regional regulations and legal requirements, said a spokeswoman.

Despite the reference to regional regulations and special features, the spokeswoman categorically rules out the introduction of 2G controls: "This is not an option for us, as we want to enable everyone to shop in our Netto stores."
