(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 02 NOV - Democrat Eric Adams has been elected mayor of New York.
The African American former police officer has beaten rival Curtis Sliwa and is preparing to take over the post of Bill de Blasio.
Adams will be the second African-American mayor in the history of New York, after David Dinkins.
A 61-year-old vegan, Adams grew up in Queens.
At the age of 15 he was arrested along with his brother and was attacked by the police: the episode convinced him to become an agent to reform the department.
After 20 years in the New York Police Department, Adams went on retirement in 2006 and ran for a seat in the New York State Senate, a post he held until 2013. He was then elected president of Brooklyn.
