On September 19, 2020 around 11:15 p.m., a crime is said to have occurred near the festival meadow in Hamburg's city park: As local media reported at the time, a 15-year-old was apparently drunk through the park after a private birthday party.
It was said that she came across a group of young men who dragged her behind a bush and raped her.
The perpetrators are said to have tortured their victim for two and a half hours, reported the "Bild" newspaper.
The department for sexual offenses in the State Office of Criminal Investigation, LKA 42, took over the case.
Filmed with cell phones?
At the request of SPIEGEL, a spokeswoman for the Hamburg public prosecutor said that twelve suspects are currently being investigated who were between 16 and 20 years old at the time of the crime.
An arrest warrant was issued against one of the suspects in March, but the young man was spared the execution of the same subject to conditions.
Witnesses to the incident had stated that the crime was filmed with cell phones.
However, the public prosecutor's office is not in possession of such recordings, the spokeswoman said.
Videos from surveillance cameras
However, the investigators had evaluated video material from surveillance cameras in the area.
Several visitors to the city park, who reported after the witnesses were called, also provided the police with clues.
The public prosecutor did not want to comment on the allegation that the girl had also been robbed.
The investigations into the case have largely been concluded, the lawyers have been given access to the files, and a decision will be made "promptly" on the indictment.
