Pinar Atalay worked for the television broadcaster Phoenix, switched to ARD, moderated the »Tagesthemen« and can be seen today on RTL.
Her elementary school teacher probably wouldn't have expected Atalay to have such a career one day.
The teacher didn't even think she could go to high school, as Atalay told Brigitte Woman magazine: “Not because my grades were bad, but because she just couldn't imagine a girl like me being there would manage. "
Atalay's parents came to Germany as Turkish guest workers.
She knows that "a biography like mine is not yet normal in people's heads," said the 43-year-old.
Ambition and opportunity
"It shouldn't count where I'm from, but what I make of it," said the journalist.
There are many reasons for your success: a mixture of ambition, talent, luck and opportunity.
In part, however, their drive has to do with their origins.
That connects many children and young people with a history of migration.
"Our parents came up with the claim: We want to be something here," said Atalay.
And they would have given their children to understand: "You have to take part now - be better, be more sensible, don't cause trouble."
