Every new beginning is difficult, one could say in a variation of a proverb: The feature film »Eternals« is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but it presents ten new main characters: the human-like, but with different superpowers, Eternals.
This Thursday, the film directed by Chloé Zhao will hit cinemas in Germany, and the US cinemas will follow one day later. But the film critics were able to form their judgment in advance - and it is not particularly positive on average. This is the result of the rating on the famous "Tomatometer" on the "Rotten Tomatoes" website, which evaluates and aggregates a large number of reviews (mostly from English-speaking countries).
According to this, “Eternals” had a score of 53 percent on Thursday lunchtime - a 100 percent rating would mean that there would be cheers without exception, 0 percent would be consistently bad reviews.
In the cited reviews there are positive approaches that praise the diversity of the characters.
But there are also reviews in which Oscar winner Chloé Zhao is referred to as the wrong cast for an action spectacle.

Cinema spectacle "Eternals": It has never looked more atmospheric in the Marvel universeBy Hannah Pilarczyk
With a rating of 53 percent, "Eternals" is at the bottom of the Marvel film rankings in "Rotten Tomatoes", behind "Marvel's The Punisher" from 2017 and "Thor: The Dark World" from 2013. The best »Black Panther« with Chadwick Boseman has an almost perfect 96 percent rating.
By the way, SPIEGEL critic Hannah Pilarczyk found something to be praiseworthy about "Eternals": All in all, the film was entertaining, thanks to its attractive cast;
Director Zhao contributes her »grounded film poetry«.
