The real reason why parents wait with their children's vaccine

Only recently has a vaccine against Corona been approved for children aged 5-11, but judging by the state of vaccination for older children - it is not going to be easy.

And that's the real reason

In a classic experiment in behavioral economics, half of the subjects received a message that an unfamiliar old uncle had bequeathed an investment portfolio to them.

What do they want to do now with the case?

Most of the subjects decided to leave the case as it is.

This is a choice that is extremely puzzling.

They did not know what the boiler's investment capabilities were, and whether the portfolio's performance justified leaving it as it was.

The other half have been notified that they have a sum of money at their disposal - equivalent to the investment portfolio received by the others - and they can decide how to invest it.

Here they had no problem making decisions about allocating the money.

What is the difference between the groups?

The group with the money knew that there was no choice, one had to invest, because one had to build an investment portfolio while the group with the rich uncle was afraid to change the existing situation.

If they move the composition of the bag, and its performance will be less good than it would have been under the composition set by the uncle, they will feel responsibility and remorse, because they acted actively to change.

But if they leave the case, even if its performance is not brilliant, they are not supposed to be responsible for it, because they were just passive.

This is of course irrational, since a decision to leave the situation as it is is also a decision.

But it's very, very human.

How does this relate to children's vaccines?

Also on the issue of children's vaccines for corona, there is a difference between actively causing our children to be vaccinated, and possibly exposed to side effects (which are milder from corona disease), and passive conduct, ostrich style, which says - there is a situation that my child will "kidnap" corona, but it Will happen by chance and not at my own risk.

And some combine it with statements about organic food and a healthy lifestyle, which while helping to deal with any physical difficulty, is not an alternative to corona vaccine.

No parent wants their child to get sick, in Corona or any other illness.

And we all want to control the health of our children and protect them as much as possible.

Be active and get vaccinated.

But control, and our defense, are nothing more than an illusion of control and defense.

Ask the father of the late Eden Fiumi, a 16-year-old boy who died after post-corona complications, without anyone knowing he was infected at all. The boy was not vaccinated. His father told the media "a few days ago he was healthy, he did not have corona." Tragically, he dies. The thought that if something goes wrong we will act, and there is nothing to do before, is wrong.

When something goes wrong, it may be too late. Vaccinate children, even when they are not sick, and even when a small percentage (and still too large) of sick children suffer from a severe and even fatal disease.

Perhaps this is the reason that as of 31.10.2021 before data from the Ministry of Health website, only 56.6 percent of children aged 12-15 were vaccinated, compared to 86.7 percent of 16-19 year olds. The gap is huge, and is not explained by the vaccination approval dates, because I am referring here to anyone who has been vaccinated, whether in one, two, or three doses. It is very possible that we see here the effect of parental "protection" against the vaccine, or the fear of harming the child, and it is also possible that this is the picture we will see when they start vaccinating younger children. But I hope not.

The damage from the corona is clear - illness, isolation, loneliness, disruption of the agenda and conduct, and a general derailment for children and parents alike. The damage from the vaccine is much smaller. Let's overcome the human tendency to pretend that we are not responsible for avoiding its actions. Let's be proactive and choose to be vaccinated.
