"How brave you are," "You are a real hero, you will defeat the disease," are just some of the sentences some of us say to women diagnosed with breast cancer. Not everyone finds the right words to say, and we try in every way possible to encourage and support. However, if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer you probably do not want to be labeled a "professional cancer fighter". After all, the same woman, spouse, mother, daughter, sister or girlfriend, even though the diagnosis you received marks the beginning of a life-changing journey.

After a diagnosis of breast cancer, the conversation with the doctor often focuses on the physical aspect of the disease, what symptoms you have, what treatment you will receive and what side effects are expected. But just as cancer affects physical health, the disease also comes at a mental price. It brings with it feelings and emotions that can change every day, every hour and even every minute.

Various aspects of the disease and its treatment, for example, the pain, the possible change in appearance or how your family will deal with your disease, can frighten and worry you.

The fact that you have cancer and the knowledge that your life is about to change during and after the treatments can lead to the development and intensification of many different emotions - anxiety, stress, sadness, depression, anger and sometimes even guilt.

Along with all the challenging emotions that can arise, you may also feel lonely.

Once you have been diagnosed with breast cancer or metastatic breast cancer you may feel that you are "alone in the battle" - that even the people closest to you can not really understand what you are going through.

All of these feelings are normal, whether you are undergoing treatment or have already completed it.

The support you can get - around the corner

It is not always easy to talk about the emotional side of breast cancer diagnosis, and many women are reluctant to share their feelings with family or friends. Sometimes out of embarrassment and sometimes because they are afraid to "burden" their loved ones if they talk about their fears or needs. However, support from the environment is one of the important aspects of the journey that women with breast cancer go through.

The people around you can positively affect your physical function, mental well-being and even your ability to adapt to life with cancer. Several studies suggest that there is a link between a supportive environment and positive breast cancer treatment outcomes. In addition, it can help reduce mental stress and improve the feelings that accompany coping with the disease.

The important thing in support is not the number of people around, but the quality of support you receive in the treatment and illness journey. A small network of loyal friends, children or relatives is also sufficient, helping with care and associations can provide significant emotional support.

There are associations and groups around the world that accompany women who have been diagnosed with or recovered from breast cancer, or support groups for women who have had metastatic breast cancer.

In addition to the support they provide, some of the associations connect patients with women who have had breast cancer.

Although such support does not completely eliminate loneliness, support from women who have been through similar things, "who have been there," can help patients know and feel that they are not alone, whether they have a supportive environment at home or not.
