The outgoing president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, was re-elected with 75% of the votes for a

new five-year period until 2027

: this is what emerges from the official results of the elections held yesterday.

The EU and the US rejected the elections, in which the main opposition leaders could not participate.

Since June, 37 members of the opposition, including seven candidates for presidential candidacy, have ended up in prison.

"The November 7 elections complete

Nicaragua's conversion to an autocratic regime

", comments EU High Representative

Josep Borrell,

underlining that "following the social protests that broke out in the spring of 2018, the Nicaraguan government unleashed violence against its own people, leaving behind death, enforced disappearances, imprisonment, mistreatment and mass exile and transforming the country into a republic of fear ". These elections

"are a farce

": the chairman of

the European Parliament's

Foreign Affairs

Committee,

the German David McAllister (EPP), and the president of the delegation for relations with the countries of Central America, the Luxembourgian Tilly Metz (Verdi), commented in a joint statement on the electoral result in the Central American country.

Criticism also from the US

with the American president Joe Biden who defines the presidential elections in the country as "bogus".

Ortega received the

congratulations of

the

former Bolivian president Evo Morales

and yesterday, even before the announcement of the Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) confirming the victory, also from the

Venezuelan colleague Nicolás Maduro

. Via Twitter Morales greeted "the worthy people of Nicaragua who, in a show of democratic courage and maturity, elected Daniel Ortega as constitutional president despite the United States' campaign of lies, blackmail and threats. Ortega's triumph means the defeat of the United States. Yankee interventionism ". For his part, Maduro, through social networks, wanted to send "a hug of joy to the people of Nicaragua, to Commander Daniel Ortega and to Rosario, for the great day of popular and peaceful participation in today's elections. Sandino's sons and daughters , they vote for the peace, stability and prosperity of their homeland ".

The

Russian Federation considers "unacceptable" the US position not to recognize the results

of elections in Nicaragua and that they were held in accordance with all requirements of the legislation of the country: it was said the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, again from the Interfax agency. "We believe this is unacceptable and strongly condemn this line," Lavrov said in a press conference following talks with Venezuela's foreign minister, Felix Plasencia. Lavrov also stated that according to observers sent by Russia, the elections "took place in an organized manner, in full compliance with Nicaraguan legislation".

The Supreme Electoral Council (CSE) of Nicaragua awarded

74.99% of the votes to the Sandinista Front of Daniel Ortega and his wife

and vice president Rosario Murillo in the first final report of the results of yesterday's disputed elections. This is 49.25% of the votes counted. The Partido Liberal Constitucionalista (Plc) is in second place with 14.4%, followed by the Nicaraguan Christian Camino (Ccn) with 3.44%, the Alianza Liberal Nicaragüense (Aln, 3.27%), the Alianza por la República (Opens) with 2.2% and the Partido Liberal Independiente (Pli, 1.70%). According to the CSE, the turnout was 65.3%, a level contested by opposition organizations and the independent observatory Urnas Abiertas, which estimates a national abstention of 81.5%.

Yesterday's electoral appointment was preceded in recent months by continuous action by the judiciary and police who, applying a law considered to be 'defense of the Fatherland',

have jailed or placed under house arrest at least 37 political opponents

, including seven people who aspired to the presidential candidacy.

The justice system has also disqualified political and social parties and organizations and has closed the press organs, also blocking the exit of La Prensa.
