"We are dealing with someone who wanted to kill a cop", judge Laurent Martin de Frémont, national representative of the SGP Police-FO Unit union.

At around 6.30am this morning, a crew of four police officers from Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes) was attacked by a man equipped with a stabbing weapon.

One of the officials was notably targeted by a stab wound in the thorax, but was not injured, thanks to his bulletproof vest.

The assailant, a 37-year-old Algerian unknown to the intelligence services, said on several occasions that he was acting "in the name of the prophet".

According to our information, he received two bullets, one in the side, the other in the back.

Its vital prognosis is engaged.

The investigation was entrusted to the judicial police of Nice and the national anti-terrorism prosecution has not, at this stage, been seized.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin traveled to Cannes after the attack to provide “support” to the teams there.

"Not only must we greatly improve security and gendarmes by increasing the number of troops" but we must also "work on intelligence", he declared.
