On Sunday, hunters made a gruesome discovery on a remote path near the town of Grândola in southwest Portugal: they found the body of a toddler in a burned-out car.
There was also a man's body lying near the vehicle, which had a gunshot wound in the head.
As the newspaper "Correio da Manhã" reported on Monday, the dead are said to be a father and his three-year-old son.
Both come from Germany.
The authorities assumed that the father killed the child and then shot himself, reported the news portal "Jornal de Noticías" from Portugal, which also published the name of the alleged dead person and private photos.
The British mother of the child, who was separated from the father, reported a kidnapping of her child a few days ago after the man did not bring the son back as agreed, the newspaper wrote.
Further details were initially not known.
The police have started an investigation.
