Do the French drink more than they should?

This is the result of a survey carried out in 2020 by Public Health France (SPF).

According to their barometer, published this Tuesday morning, in 2020, “23.7% of the population aged 18 to 75” has exceeded “the benchmarks for alcohol consumption”.

For the purposes of this survey carried out in 2020, by telephone, the pollsters questioned 14,873 people aged 18 to 85 on their consumption over the last seven days.

According to SPF criteria, “alcohol consumption exceeds the benchmarks if the person declares having drunk more than two glasses of alcohol in a day and / or declares having drunk more than ten glasses of alcohol on the whole. week and / or declares not to have had at least two days without alcohol consumption during the week ”.

Even if the results are based only on declarations, SPF manages to determine that men exceed the benchmarks more than women.

33.2% of men surveyed exceed the criteria, compared to 14.7% of women.

Higher diplomas and high salaries more affected

"The youngest more frequently exceed the threshold of two drinks per day while their elders more exceed the five days of consumption in the week, writes SPF.

This observation is observed among both men and women ”.
