There are all sorts of theories about blood type and its implications for the life of each and every one of us - some believe that blood type has effects on certain personality traits, some diets are specifically tailored to blood type with foods that are forbidden or allowed to be eaten depending on blood type.
These theories are not always backed by scientifically based facts or evidence, but new research points to a different effect of blood type, and it is just as interesting and relevant to our daily lives.
According to the researchers, there are blood types whose owners are at higher risk of developing blood clots and related medical conditions, such as deep vein thrombosis, various bleeding conditions and, for women at least - high blood pressure during pregnancy.
In addition, the researchers found a link between blood types B and O and the formation of kidney stones.
The new study, published in the journal eLife, provides new and interesting insights into the issue of congenital disease, which stems from blood type.

According to preliminary findings, blood types A and B are more likely to develop heart disease, while people with blood type O are more likely to have clotting problems that cause bleeding.
The study, conducted in Sweden, involved more than five million people with blood types A, B and O as well as having a positive and negative RhD component (which determines whether the blood type is + or -).
Each of these variables, the researchers found, has an effect on the risk of developing various diseases.
About fifty different diseases have been found to be related to blood type.

Researchers from the prestigious Karolinska Research Institute in Sweden have crossed blood types and more than 1,000 different diseases and disorders.
Their conclusions were that there are at least 49 diseases that are related to certain blood types and one disorder related to the RhD factor.
The study shows that people with blood type A are more likely to develop blood clots and suffer from diseases related to hypercoagulability such as deep vein thrombosis (DBT).
People with blood type O, on the other hand, are at a higher risk of suffering from bleeding problems.
In addition, women with blood type O and / or RhD positive antigen are more likely to have high blood pressure during pregnancy.

People with blood type B have a lower tendency to suffer from kidney stones.
Whereas those with blood type AB were not found to have a particular predisposition or increased risk for any of the diseases or medical conditions associated with the other blood types.
However, the researchers stressed that although their research is comprehensive and includes a very broad sample group, it is still a preliminary study and now it is necessary to delve further into this area of research and see if there are other reasons that may explain the link between certain diseases and blood types.
Ultimately, the aim of the study is to identify risk factors that could enable better preventive medicine for the general public.
