A seven-year-old boy died while playing on a heavy memorial cross in Büren in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The child had stayed with a six-year-old friend at the almost one meter high sandstone cross, as the police announced on Friday.
The cross was erected on a hillside and fell from the concrete platform for an unexplained cause, it said.
The cross fell on the boy.
According to the information, he suffered severe injuries.
His friend immediately reported to his parents, who rushed to help and alerted the ambulance service.
Two emergency doctors and several paramedics tried unsuccessfully to reanimate the child.
The boy died at the scene of the accident.
Radio Hochstift first reported about the accident on Thursday.
The police had secured traces in the evening and secured the cross.
