(ANSA) - BRUSSELS - After the favorable vote of the member states, the European Commission has authorized the placing on the market of the migratory locust as a new food.
It will be available in frozen, dried and powdered form to be marketed as a snack or food ingredient.
The OK in Brussels comes after the positive opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded that the consumption of the insect is safe for the uses envisaged by the application.
Products containing this novel food will be labeled to inform about potential allergic reactions.
The first authorization of an insect as a novel food, dried flour moths, was adopted last July.
