He can no longer breathe alone - this man is currently one of 30 patients in the intensive care unit of the Munich Clinic in the Schwabing district of the Bavarian capital.

And it is now on the verge of collapse.

Niklas Schneider, intensive care physician: »We are running full.

We are now at the maximum occupancy that we can afford at the moment.

We have to keep in mind that, in contrast to the first wave, we have significantly fewer caregivers.

To put it in numbers: Instead of my 18 beds, which I was able to use in the first wave, I can only care for nine intensive care patients at the moment.

That's a catastrophe.

The number of patients is increasing significantly. "

According to the Robert Koch Institute, the number of new corona infections in Germany rose by almost 50,000 new cases on Friday.

The number of beds in the Munich clinic has doubled.

Niklas Schneider, intensive care physician: “With these 50,000 new infections, these are the patients who will only come now, next week, the week after next.

In other words, we have a black look to the future and really have concerns about how we can care for these patients. "

Mainly because there is still a shortage of staff.

And that feels left alone by German society.

Niklas Schneider, intensive care physician: “We are incredibly frustrated because we have to absorb everything here that does not work for society as a whole. We have to take care of the sick who come to us, who are critically ill. They need help, regardless of whether they were previously corona deniers, opponents of vaccinations or anything else. Or were double vaccinated - we don't actually see any of them here on the ward. We only have unvaccinated people lying here at the moment. "

Some patients from overburdened hospitals have already had to be transferred.

In response, the parties of the future traffic light coalition do not want a new lockdown.

Instead, the mask requirement and compliance with social distance in public spaces are to be extended until March.

Health Minister Jens Spahn announced the reintroduction of free citizen tests on Friday.

And Chancellor Angela Merkel again appealed to all unvaccinated people to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
