He and his friends wanted to go to a birthday party, but instead of having someone bring them to them, a boy from Rhineland-Palatinate picked up the car keys himself. Now his parents could face legal proceedings.

It will take a few more years before he can get a driver's license: A 13-year-old took his parents' car for a spin in the Palatinate.

Together with his friends, the boy drove to a birthday party in Lingenfeld in the district of Germersheim, as the police announced on Saturday.

He was watched by a woman who was surprised at the young appearance and alerted the police.

Clarifying discussion with the police

How the child got the car and the keys on Friday evening and why they can drive a car at all was initially unclear.

The boy cannot be prosecuted for his journey because he is still too young.

A police spokesman said the 13-year-old would be summoned for a clarifying interview.

In addition, the parents could face proceedings.

It was not initially clear whether they knew about their son's tour.
