How to heat rice - with an ice cube (@monmackfood)

Home cooker Moon Mack, a resident of Brisbane, Australia, showed more than 226,000 of her followers at Tiktok how she prepares a Mediterranean rice-salmon dish. For the dish, she used leftover cooked rice and heated it in the microwave, only instead of placing it on a plate and putting it straight into the microwave - she pulled an ice cube from the freezer, placed it on the rice, covered it with baking paper and put it in the heater. Her followers reacted less to the final product and more to her bizarre decision to add an ice cube to the dish, however an expert in the field confirms that one ice cube does help evaporate the rice in the microwave without drying it out.

In the short video she shared with Tiktok, where she shares countless surprising recipes, Moon is first seen slicing a salad and then in a separate plate sprinkling with salmon and pouring over a one-day serving of rice.

Immediately afterwards she places one ice cube over the rice, covers the plate with baking paper and puts the plate in a 30-second heat in the microwave.

When she removes the baking paper after heating, the ice cube still remains there for her, so she removes it in her hand.

The ice helps the evaporation process in the microwave and the result is steamed, airy and fresh rice.

According to Test Kitchen, the water molecules from the ice help to evaporate the day-old rice without drying it out.

The editor of the scientific section, Paul Adams, explained why the ice cube remains intact on the rice after heating in the microwave.

He told the Daily Mail: "Microwaves heat food by causing certain types of molecules - especially water molecules - inside the food to vibrate rapidly. In ice, the water molecules are bound and locked tightly together in the crystalline structure so that they do not vibrate. "(Because its grains contain water) and the heat from the rice heats the surface of the ice cube so that it melts only slightly. The liquid water released from the melting ice is boiled by the microwave, evaporating and steaming the rice."

In the comments to the video many were amazed at the extra ice.

"What is the ice cube in the middle of the salmon bowl for? What does it do?"

Another viewer reinforced: "It makes the rice more airy and gives it a fresh taste."

Another added: "It helps to evaporate the rice in the microwave ... I usually just add a little water so that the rice does not harden."
