Germany submerged by a fourth wave
Long considered the example to follow in terms of managing the epidemic during the first wave, Germany is currently seeing the number of positive Covid cases skyrocket.
The Robert Koch Institute for Public Health Surveillance indicates on Monday an incidence rate of 303 per 100,000 inhabitants, against 289 the day before, a figure never reached since the start of the pandemic.
By way of comparison, the incidence rate stood at 197.6 on December 22, 2020, just before the launch of the vaccination campaigns.
A record at the time, buried since November 8 (201.1).
"The fourth wave of the pandemic is unfortunately developing as we feared, because the number of vaccinated is not sufficient"
, lamented Lothar Wieler, president of the Robert Koch Institute for Public Health Surveillance, during a press conference.
The Minister of Health Jens Spahn speaks, him, of an epidemic of the
"unvaccinated"
.
67.5% of the population has received its two doses to date, according to the Federal Ministry of Health, reflecting a non-compulsory vaccination in Germany.
