The TV series "The Simpsons" almost ended ten years ago. Producer Al Jean had already thought of a plot - an episode from the 23rd season would have been the last.

In March, the US cartoon series "The Simpsons" celebrated its anniversary with the 700th episode.

Apparently the series almost stopped running ten years ago.

The "Simpsons" co-author and producer Al Jean announced in an interview with the British magazine "Radio Times".

In 2011 they considered ending the series with the 23rd season and making "Christmas - the next generation" the last episode, says Jean in an interview.

"I'm glad we didn't because there have been a lot of great episodes since season 23." The show has now aired 33 seasons.

Christmas in an endless loop

According to Jean, he already had a possible ending in mind: The plan was therefore to revert to the plot in the first episode "It's hard for Christmas" from 1989 at the end.

"The whole series would be an endless loop," said Jean in an interview.

"If I had to, I would end it like this." In fact, 13 more episodes followed in season 23 alone.

In the first episode of the animated series "The Simpsons", family man Homer, dressed as Santa Claus, tries to collect money in a shopping mall.

He is short of funds for gifts for his family, his employer does not pay him a Christmas bonus.

The episode "Christmas - the next generation" shows another Christmas party, but this time in the future: Bart and Lisa have now grown up and have their own family.

An end to the TV series "The Simpsons" is not in sight, according to Jean.

“Right now I don't see anyone saying, 'Let's get this to a conclusion,'” says Jean.

The series scores "very good" internationally.

Nonetheless, in the interview, Jean shows doubts that "The Simpsons" will make the 1,000th episode.

"That's twelve more seasons," says Jean.

"So let's say I'll be very happy to be here in twelve seasons."

The cartoon series "The Simpsons" started in 1989 in the USA.

It was first seen on German television in 1991.

The series can now also be seen on the “Disney plus” streaming channel.

At the beginning of the year it was extended for two more seasons until 2023.
