Those who are vaccinated against the flu reduce the risk of getting seriously ill.

However, like any drug, the influenza vaccination has side effects.

All medications and vaccinations can have side effects.

These are recorded by the manufacturer and listed in the package insert, among other things.

It is no different with vaccinations against seasonal flu.

Here, too, it can lead to mostly harmless, temporary symptoms.

This refers to undesirable reactions of the body that can set in after immunization with the flu vaccine.

There are people who develop flu-like symptoms after receiving the flu vaccination. But immunization against influenza cannot trigger flu, according to pharmacist Sven Seißelberg from the commercial health insurance company (KKH). “During the vaccination, fragments of killed influenza viruses are injected. The immune system builds up antibodies against them, ”says Seißelberg, according to the KKH:“

They cannot cause any disease on their own

”. If the flu occurs shortly after the vaccination, the pathogen must have been caught somewhere beforehand, it continues.

You should spare yourself a few days after vaccination with dead vaccines such as the flu vaccination, as recommended by the Barmer health insurance company.

Background:

After the vaccination, the body is busy producing antibodies against influenza viruses

.

The immune system is therefore heavily challenged and should not be additionally strained by physical exertion, according to the Barmer.

If you exert yourself too much, you run the risk of unwanted vaccination reactions such as pain at the injection site or headache.

Fatigue, arm pain and fever after the flu vaccination: possible vaccination reactions

As the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) informs, the safety of the flu vaccines has also been confirmed for pregnant women and their unborn children.

In addition, no increased number of severe reactions due to vaccination was noted, it said.

However, stimulating the body's own defenses could lead to usually harmless, temporary vaccination reactions after the vaccination.

The BZgA and the Saarland University Hospital list the following possible physical reactions after the flu vaccination:

  • Redness or swelling at the injection site

  • Pain in the arm

  • fever

  • Shivering or sweating

  • fatigue

  • malaise

  • nausea

  • Headache, muscle and / or joint pain

Such vaccination reactions usually subside after a few days, according to the BZgA.

As the Saarland University Hospital informs, there are very seldom temporary nerve disorders and allergic reactions after the flu vaccination.

The latter mainly affects people with egg white allergies or allergies to other components of the vaccine.

Are you allergic and unsure whether a flu vaccination is possible for you?

Raise your concerns to the doctor treating you.

They can decide whether a vaccination makes sense for you.
