François Gabart, the skipper, who joined Tom Laperche on the SVR Lazartigue trimaran in the Jacques Vabre transatlantic race, is well known, but less of the company manager.

Mer Concept, specializing in the development and construction of racing sailboats, announced on Tuesday evening the launch of a research laboratory with other companies specializing in participating in the development of more sustainable mobility.

The idea is to find new solutions in construction but also with the development of new modes of transport on water.

Sailing or offshore racing carry a strong message in public opinion in terms of the environment.

However, the maritime world, like others, is faced with important challenges in terms of sustainable development and in particular in the construction of racing yachts.

Carbon recycling, a subject that goes beyond the construction of racing boats

As in many industries, the use of carbon has become an essential component in the construction of high performance offshore racing boats.

Except that the carbon that is also found in the blades of wind turbines in the automotive industry is hardly recyclable.

To put it simply, the only solution for the moment is landfill.

Work on resins, implementation processes and recycling will be carried out.

The idea is both to allow the boating sector to benefit from these advances but also to other sectors that use this carbon.

The future is foiling

The Ultim maxi catamarans currently in the race in the Jacques Vabre transatlantic allow these boats equipped with foils to literally fly above the water with exceptional speeds of over 40 knots (nearly 75km / h).

Thanks to this expertise, Mer Concept is developing electric foiling catamarans for yachting.

The company has also just announced the creation of a foil ferry capable of carrying 200 passengers.

This 30-meter boat should be able to reach an average speed of 40 knots while reducing its consumption by 40% compared to a boat without these appendages.

However, these new generation boats require many technological advances to ensure safe navigation.

The company is working on a foil ferry capable of carrying 200 passengers.

In addition to this research, François Gabart also wears the colors of the Kresk4 Oceans background to fight against plastic pollution of the seas.

Created by Didier Tabary, the boss of the Kresk cosmetics group, sponsor of the trimaran SVR Lazartigue, this endowment fund has launched in partnership with the Fondation de la Mer, in a project to recycle plastic waste collected on the French coast.

This will involve financing SMEs in order to create local channels for recycling and transforming waste into sustainable objects with 500 tonnes over the next three years.
