Brigitte Macron implicitly disapproved Thursday the addition of the non-gender pronoun "iel" in the online version of the prestigious French dictionary Le Robert, after criticism from the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer.

"There are two pronouns, he and she," said the wife of President Emmanuel Macron, questioned by journalists on this subject, after a visit with Jean-Michel Blanquer to a college in the 15th arrondissement of Paris on the occasion of the National Day against Bullying at School.

“The language is so beautiful.

And two pronouns is good, ”she added.

"We should not triturate the French language whatever the causes", estimated for his part Jean-Michel Blanquer, after attending with Brigitte Macron training and discussion time with college students on harassment.

"Feminism is a great cause, but it is not a cause that justifies grinding the French language, for example," he added.

"It is very good to feminize the names of professions, it is not something difficult to do and we do it".

"On the other hand, the midpoint (used in inclusive writing, editor's note), things which are unexpected modifications of the French language, that is not good in any way, including for the essential subject from my point of view which is the learning of fundamental knowledge on the part of our students ”, he judged.

"Inclusive writing is not the future of the French language"

Jean-Michel Blanquer had already spoken on this subject Tuesday, supporting the LREM deputy François Jolivet, who had denounced the entry of this word in the dictionary and had written on this subject to the French Academy, official guardian of the French language.

Mr. Jolivet had estimated on Twitter that the authors of the Petit Robert were "the activists of a cause which has nothing French: wokism".

“I obviously support @ FJolivet36's protest vis-à-vis #PetitRobert.

Inclusive writing is not the future of the French language, ”Mr. Blanquer said on Twitter.

More and more used by non-binary people

Le Robert editions had defended Wednesday the addition of this word, to avoid a distinction of genre, to the online version of their dictionary.

This neutral pronoun still little used in everyday language, but more and more used by people who define themselves as non-binary, that is to say who do not recognize themselves in the feminine or masculine gender.

In a press release published on the Robert's website, its director general, Charles Bimbenet, defended himself from any activism, recalling that “Robert's mission is to observe the evolution of a French language in movement, diverse, and report on it ”.
