Rapper Antifuchs comes to the Munich Volkstheater for the trap opera “cloud * s * cape”.

The new piece draws a dystopia of what our world, shaped by climate change, could look like in a few decades.

Her fans only know her with a black fox mask - when we meet her in the foyer of the Volkstheater, she comes up to us with a big smile. Rapper Antifuchs without a mask, in civilian clothes, so to speak. The distinctive recognition feature is added to the photo - after all, she has been a loyal companion for about eight years, as she says. “I'm anti, the fox,” she says and laughs. “Anti is the attitude, the fox is it. When she laughs, and she often does, it is loud and hoarse. One more quick look in the mirror to make sure everything is in place, and the tough artist is ready for photos.

The rapper was born in Kazakhstan, grew up in Flensburg and lives in Berlin.

They brought author and dramaturge Tobias Frühauf and director Philipp Wolpert to the Volkstheater in Munich for their trap opera "cloud * s * cape".

And thus create something completely new in the equally new halls of the theater: a mixture of drama and trap concert.

The premiere is on Friday.

Trap is a sub-genre of hip hop

"Trap is a sub-genre of hip-hop with specific stylistic devices such as auto-tune or fast, hyperactive hi-hats," explains Antifuchs.

Trap is a genre of music in which the content does not play a major role, which is characterized by simplicity.

"That was the challenge: to fill the tracks with the complex content and to make something tangible and tangible out of the difficult topic."

The Volkstheater brings a dystopia to the stage - what could our future shaped by climate change look like?

Melting polar ice caps, water shortages, the elite live in skyscrapers in otherwise barren desert cities.

A group of climate activists is fighting for the sustainable improvement of their future, but politicians are left with empty words.

The piece asks the question of how far resistance can go - within a thematic framework that couldn't be more topical.

The collaboration with the theater is a premiere for the artist.

"Of course I've been on stage often and rapped, actually I don't do anything else," she says.

"But on a theater stage, with such a large team behind it, that's really exciting."

In preparation, the ensemble was in lively exchange with environmental activists from “Fridays For Future” and “Extinction Rebellion”.

"The youth, almost a whole generation, are committed, take to the streets, get loud and at the same time feel this blatant frustration because nothing happens or only slowly." The question raised in the play is therefore also in real discourses of relevance - how far can protest, resistance, go when it comes to the survival of our planet?

On one condition, the artist would remove the mask

In addition to her work at the Volkstheater, the musician is currently working on a new album.

When asked if she would ever drop the mask, she laughs.

“Maybe, but she has one condition.

The mask wants to be successful. ”Once in the upper chart ranks, then she would think about it.

She put the fox face on for the first time at a battle rap tournament, when there were far fewer women in rap than today. "Make it nicer, not so many swear words, you're a girl," she no longer wanted to listen and put on the mask. She took her “female target”: “I didn't want it to be about my face, my make-up, these feminine attributes, but only about who delivers the better rap.” Today I am in the rap cosmos Much has already changed: Society's perception of sexist texts is different, and the #DeutschrapMeToo movement has also contributed to the development. The hashtag bundles experiences and allegations shaped by sexism that women have had to make in the German rap scene, which has so far been more male-dominated.Antifuchs would have spurred the resistance she encountered. Your attitude: "Always with your head against the wall!"
