In Sweden, a local politician from the right-wing populist party Sweden Democrats is in custody on suspicion of murder.

There is serious evidence, said prosecutor Marina Chirakova, as the broadcaster SVT reported on Saturday.

The suspect from the city of Nyköping is older than 60 years.

Body parts were found in a canal near Stockholm Central Station in mid-September.

Various media reported that a diver discovered the limb while cleaning it.

You belonged to a man in their 60s who had previously been reported missing.

Police arrested the suspect last week, and prosecutor Chirakova made the case public on Saturday.

She did not comment on possible connections between the victim and the alleged perpetrator.

The party has roots in the skinhead and Nazi milieu

The arrested person is a member of the right-wing populist party Sweden Democrats and held a local political office in the city of Nyköping, a good hundred kilometers south of Stockholm.

The Sweden Democrats were shocked by the allegations.

The party takes the allegations very seriously and has suspended the man's membership, said a party spokesman.

The Sweden Democrats came out of a merger of the »Framstegspartiet« at the end of the eighties.

(Progressive Party) and the right-wing radical movement »Bevara Sverige Svenskt« (Hold Sweden Swedish).

Their roots are in the skinhead and Nazi milieu.

In the past few years, party leader Jimmie Åkesson tried to free the Sweden Democrats from their image of filthy children and to lead them into a governing coalition.

In the most recent Reichstag election in 2018, the party became the third strongest force with 17.5 percent and appeared to be a possible kingmaker.

In the end, however, the Social Democrats formed a minority government with the Greens.
