He was the last survivor of a drama that marked the spirits in 1996. Brother Jean-Pierre Schumacher had escaped the massacre of Tibéhirine, during the Algerian civil war, where seven Trappist monks from the monastery were murdered after being kidnapped .

This monk, who had not been taken away from him, died this Sunday, in the land of Islam, in Morocco, at the age of 97.

He was already dead when his brothers found him, after the Eucharist, according to the daily La Croix which reveals the information, confirmed by AFP.

Still according to the daily, “Brother Jean-Pierre” had received the sacrament of the sick that very morning.

The seven monks were kidnapped during the night of March 26-27, 1996 and kidnapped for several weeks.

A press release attributed to the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) announced on May 21, 1996 their assassination.

The heads of the monks were found on May 30, 1996, 4 km northwest of Medea.

Since the death of Brother Amédée in 2008, he was the last survivor of this tragic kidnapping.

Originally from Lorraine, brother Jean-Pierre Schumacher had escaped the Covid last year, reported Le Progrès.

After being hospitalized in Rabat (Morocco) for fifteen days, the Trappist had found his monastery of Midelt in Morocco with two other brothers also affected by the virus.

After the tragedy, Brother Jean-Pierre had chosen to continue living in the monastery of Notre-Dame de l'Atlas, located in Midelt (Morocco).

Pope Francis had even met him during his apostolic trip to Morocco in 2019. His seven fellow martyrs of Tibéhirine were beatified on December 8, 2019 during a mass celebrated at the sanctuary of Santa Cruz in Oran (Algeria).
