The "400 Mawozo" gang demanded a million dollars for each hostage. Apparently two of the North American missionaries in Haiti are now free. The kidnappers are still holding 15 others.

Two of the 17 North American Christian missionaries who were taken hostage in Haiti last month have been released, according to their church organization.

"We learned that two of the hostages were released in Haiti," said the "Christian Aid Ministries" group based in Ohio in a statement.

The two missionaries are "in good spirits" and are being looked after.

No further details were given about those released or the circumstances of their release.

"While we are happy to be released, our hearts go out to the 15 people who are still being held," the group said.

The 16 Americans and one Canadian, including five children, were kidnapped in October after visiting an orphanage.

The leader of the 400 Mawozo gang has threatened to kill the hostages if the gang's demands are not met.

According to authorities, the gang was asking for a million dollars each.

At first it was not clear whether the children were included.

The US government has asked US citizens to leave Haiti because of the increasing insecurity in the country and the severe shortage of fuel.
