The South Korean K-Pop group BTS won the most important award for "Artist of the Year" at the American Music Awards (AMAs). The seven-member boy band from South Korea stood out at the award ceremony on Sunday in Los Angeles, among others, the American pop singer Taylor Swift - who had recently received this award three times in a row. The AMAs are less renowned than the Grammys, but they are the largest award in the US music industry that is given directly by the audience via online voting.
This year, the entire three-hour award ceremony was dominated by the globally successful K-Pop band: BTS appeared at the beginning of the show with the band Coldplay and sang "My Universe" for the best pop song (»Butter«) - and ended the evening with a performance of the hit.
Taylor Swift did not go away empty-handed: She was recognized as Pop Artist of the Year - and received the award for Pop Album of the Year ("Evermore").
The 31-year-old has already won 34 AMAs in the course of her career, a record in the history of the award, which has been awarded since 1973.
According to the industry magazine "Billboard", Michael Jackson came in second with 26 awards.
The evening went less well for newcomer Olivia Rodrigo, who was nominated seven times.
She only won the new artist award.
Canadian singer The Weeknd was nominated six times but only won in the male R&B artist category.
The Italian ESC winner Måneskin came away empty-handed.
They were subject to rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the newly created »Trending Song« category - for songs that are particularly popular on the TikTok social network.
