In the Astrid Lindgren primary school in Cologne's Ehrenfeld district, a fire broke out on Monday evening for reasons that have not yet been clarified.
It was a major fire, said spokesmen for the fire brigade and police on request and confirmed an early report by the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger".
Numerous helpers rushed to the scene of the fire, including a dozen police officers.
People are not in danger in the building, said a police spokesman.
According to him, the alarm was raised around 7.45 p.m.
The extinguishing work is expected to last until at least midnight.
The Cologne fire brigade called on Twitter to avoid the area around the school.
Four fire engines are currently in use to get the flames under control.
