Covid-19: what the Scientific Council recommends for the 3rd dose

The Scientific Council believes that the government must consider a booster dose for all, in order to fight against the fifth wave. Da

Incidence rate at more than 200 in one in four departments, multiple health restrictions in Europe ... To cope with the "lightning" start of the Covid-19 epidemic, to use the words of Gabriel Attal, government spokesperson , should access to the third dose be increased?

In any case, this is what the Scientific Council and the Vaccine Strategy Orientation Council (COSV) suggest, in their respective opinions, published this Monday by the Ministry of Health.

The two bodies, responsible for advising the government, had been contacted by Olivier Véran's teams in mid-November, on this issue.

"The epidemic invites to consider a vaccination booster for the entire adult population 6 months after the primary vaccination", estimate the two assemblies, after having analyzed the various scientific publications relating to vaccination and the evolution of the disease. 'epidemic.

No pass without reminder?

A third dose would thus allow the vaccinated to avoid "a clear reduction in the protection" conferred by the vaccines against infections and, to a lesser extent, against severe forms, without this new injection increasing the risk of adverse effects, including included for pregnant women, summarized by the Scientific Council.

The group of experts chaired by immunologist Jean-François Delfraissy also suggests conditioning the health pass to the injection of a booster, from the age of 50 to cope with "the acceleration of the fifth wave", which could have "a marked impact" on the healthcare system, "from December 2022".

Beyond protecting the most vulnerable - people over 40 years of age should be a priority according to the Scientific Council - the third dose is now seen as a weapon in the fight against the epidemic, whereas until now the French experts were cautious about the expansion of the third dose, already in place in Israel or the United States.

Don't forget about the other approaches

Administering the booster to all adults could in the short term "limit the impact of the fifth wave on the health care system", and in the medium term "limit the risk of resumption of the epidemic in spring 2022 in the youngest", summarizes the scientific council.

For its part, the COSV specifies that the generalization of the booster among those over 50 is likely to reduce by around 40 to 50% the number of hospitalizations and admissions in critical care.

Thus, if the government follows these recommendations, a new mass vaccination campaign could begin, from mid-December 2021, until March 2022, given the 6-month delay after the second dose.

However, the experts appointed by the government also recall the importance of improving vaccination coverage, while 12.4% of French people aged 12 are not yet fully vaccinated, according to the latest figures from Public Health France.

The third dose for all must indeed go hand in hand with the application of barrier gestures, ventilation of closed places, recourse to teleworking, reinforcement of screening, using preventive tests at school, and as soon as the first symptoms appear, vaccinated or not.

“What works best is to combine the measures.

Vaccination and booster shots, yes, but you have to check all the boxes, ”recalls Antoine Flahault, epidemiologist at the University of Geneva.

Now it's up to the government to decide.
