US state of Wisconsin: car rushes into Christmas parade

Witnesses report an off-road vehicle that drove at high speed into a group of people: There were numerous injuries in an incident near Milwaukee. It is unclear whether the driver was caught.


A car crashed into a crowd in the city of Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA.

The SUV sped into a Christmas parade shortly before 5 p.m. (local time) on Sunday and injured several people, as the newspaper "Milwaukee Journal Sentinel" reported.

The police department confirmed an investigation into an incident in Waukesha at the request of the Reuters news agency, but initially did not provide any details.

Authorities later confirmed that at least 20 people were injured in the incident.

Media reports of at least one fatality have not yet been confirmed.

There is a suspect.

It was initially unclear whether he was in custody.

A video on social media shows a red SUV racing from behind towards a parade.

In a second video, police appear to have opened fire on the same vehicle after it broke a road barrier.

Deafening screams from people

Photos and videos from Waukesha circulated on Twitter showed police cars and ambulances on a Christmas-lit street after the incident.

The city's mayor, Shawn Reilly, spoke of a "traumatic situation for Waukesha."

Many of the injured were taken to hospital by relatives.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel lets an eyewitness speak.

“We saw the SUV speeding down the parade route at full throttle.

Then there was a loud bang, and then there was a deafening scream from the people who had been hit by the car, ”Angelito Tenorio said.

Afterwards he saw people running away or looking for protection in shops, others were lying on the ground.

The suburb of Waukesha has around 72,000 inhabitants and is about 30 kilometers west of the metropolis of Milwaukee.
