The parents of daycare and school children are currently doing much better again compared to the phase of the first and second lockdown.

That is the result of a current survey by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) in Berlin, which has now been published.

Accordingly, at the beginning of the fourth corona wave at the end of October, the parents surveyed said they were "significantly more satisfied with family life, childcare and life in general than in the lockdowns last winter and spring," the study says.

At the same time, they were less concerned about the future of their children than they were in April, both in terms of education and the economic situation.

"Although the incidences among young people are still high, concern for the health of children has apparently decreased when there is extensive presence in day-care centers and schools," the researchers write.

Especially among the parents of primary school children, satisfaction with childcare has risen sharply in recent months.

According to the study, the results showed reliable trends, but according to the authors they still have to be viewed with reservations: »The impact and explosiveness of the fourth corona wave [were] due to actions and statements from politics Not noticed at the end of October to the same extent as in previous waves of infection. "Open daycare centers and schools are equally important for parents and children," says Katharina Spieß, director of the Federal Institute for Population Research and co-author of the study.

Spieß advocated seeing further daycare and school closings only "as a last resort": "The importance of open educational and care facilities for parents and children, and thus society as a whole, cannot be overestimated."
