As the corona stays with us for longer and longer, existing drugs are discovered that manage to reduce symptoms in corona patients.

So it was with a sepsis drug developed at Hadassah and so it was with Ramadsibir - a drug developed against Ebola and approved as a drug against Corona.

Now, a new study has found that the common antidepressant drug fluoxetine, sold under the brand name Prozac, reduces the risk of death in patients with severe COVID-19 infection.

A large study using data from 83,584 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 from 87 U.S. health centers found that administering selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) had an effect on mortality in patients with severe COVID-19.

The study, published in the JAMA Network Open Journal, indicated that 3,401 patients who received antidepressants had a lower mortality rate than the control group of 6,802 patients who did not receive the drug.

Of the 3,401 patients who were prescribed SSRIs, 470 took fluoxetine alone, of whom only 46 died, accounting for about 9 percent.

This number is significantly lower compared to more than 13 percent (which is more than 930 patients) who died out of the 7,050 participants in the control group that included people who were not treated with antidepressants.

The study also used other antidepressants, including fluvoxamine, and they yielded higher percentages compared to fluoxetine but were lower than the rates from the untreated control group.

Fluoxamine has also been found to lower a corona patient's risk of being hospitalized, based on a recent trial in Brazil.

Antidepressants such as fluoxetine and fluvoxamine have been used to treat mental conditions for about 30 years.

Their ability to raise serotonin levels in the brain is what makes them effective in treating mental health problems.

It is interesting to note that these drugs can also be used as anti-inflammatory agents that can help relieve symptoms in COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Yugash Shah of Broadlawns Medical Center in Iowa, USA, said the findings of the new study are very "promising".

Shash said it was a good sign that some of the antidepressants used in the study could also be used to treat holicorona.

However, further research is needed to confirm the findings.

"It looks promising. As I mentioned, I would not go out and give a prescription to patients, but it does look promising," he said before noting that of course antidepressants should not be treated as vaccine substitutes.
