A pensioner from the vicinity of Hanau found a garbage bag with gold jewelry and around 100,000 euros in cash while working in the garden.
A police spokesman in Offenbach said the origin was so far completely unclear despite investigations.
The jewelry consists of women's and men's rings as well as several pocket watches, necklaces and ear studs.
According to the police, the treasures were mass-produced in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s and are worth an estimated 20,000 euros.
The condition of the bag suggests that it has been lying in the garden for several years.
A "specific reference to a possible criminal offense" has not yet been established, the police said in a press release.
With the publication of photos of the jewelry, the investigators hope to be able to determine the rightful owner or at least the background of the supposedly abandoned items.
The pensioner found the bag three weeks ago while cutting the hedge on his property.
If the owner does not report within six months, he or she is allowed to keep the money and the rings, pocket watches, necklaces and ear studs, according to the police.
