Karim Benzema, French star of Real Madrid and Bleus, was found guilty of complicity in an attempt to blackmail former teammate Mathieu Valbuena, his compatriot, for a sexual video, and was sentenced to a prison sentence of one year, with conditional suspension, and a fine of 75,000 euros.
The attacker's lawyers immediately announced that their client intends to appeal the sentence.
The Versailles Criminal Court issued sentences ranging from 18 months' suspended prison sentence to two and a half years against the other four defendants.
